The Furnished Rentals Team
We'd like to brag about our team of 50+ and how we pay them with gold and regular massages, but we can't. Instead, we are a team of four in the desert of Tucson, Arizona. We take on hard problems, solve neat geocoding pseudo-science issues, optimize all we can, write JavaScript even Google would be proud of, and then rewrite the good code that Google would be proud of just because we can. We are a start up of new ideas, innovative approaches, and an atmosphere where you can openly shoot down each other's ideas.
Theodore McGuire
Co-owner, Department of Redundancy Department
Theodore McGuire, also known by his stage name Ted, is a wishful retiree at the ripe age of 40-something. His parents noticed that he could quote movies with a remarkable accuracy at a very young age. His talent remained a party-gag until he met John Foxworthy. It was then that he noticed quoting Seinfeld, Snatch, WarGames, and various failed NASA projects would cause people, specifically programmers, to work for him. Ted is responsible for making sure the projects are eventually launched.
John Foxworthy
Co-owner, Professional Dart-Thrower
John Foxworthy, after a serious dart-throwing incident in the winter of '88, decided to take a step back and put his efforts elsewhere. He realized that the rental industry was beginning to grow and suspected that people would become accustomed to a list-view representation of rentals. John decided that this would not happen with Furnished Rentals and waited for a company to produce a quality map. Once Google released Google Maps he realized it was time to act on his idea. John is responsible for giving the team "what-if" ideas.
Chris Van Horne
Technical Director, System Administrator
Chris created and maintained all the backend PostGIS/Python cruft while overseeing technical implementations across the site. This was his first large scale project in a dynamic language and he enjoyed the experience. His advice to future people in a similar position is: understand that maintaining backwards compatibility will cost twice as much you planned, both intellectually and monetarily. He often forced employees to solve problems on Project Euler, much to their chagrin. Chris can be reached through his Google profile.
Justin Van Horne, Vim
Lead Programmer, Chief Advisor for the Dept. of Undeveloped Languages
Justin Van Horne is the team's JavaScript evangelist. He usually comes in at 8am-9am and occasionally sleeps in the office on his 6ft Ultimate Sack. His hobbies include hiking and making fun of computer engineers. He regularly screams "Why won't you leave JavaScript alone?" in a very feminine voice.
